The Pavilia Hill: A Sanctuary Amidst the Urban Jungle

Shunmyo Masuno's Award-Winning Landscape Design for Premium Condominiums

The Pavilia Hill is inspired by the Zen phrase "San Sui Ni Sei On Ari", which translates to "in the nature of mountain and river, people can hear clear and pure sound". Masuno's design aims to encapsulate this essence, providing a spiritually fulfilling living space enveloped by nature, even amidst the urban environment. The design uniquely combines straight lines, representing urban elements, with curved lines symbolizing nature. This unity is further emphasized through the use of large natural stone planters and walls, contrasted with black granite stones representing the cityscape.

One of the standout features of The Pavilia Hill is its meditation room. Here, water cascades from the ceiling, creating expanding waves that offer not only a visual spectacle but also an acoustic experience. The sound of the falling water adds another dimension to the space, further enhancing its calming and therapeutic qualities.

The project, spanning approximately 3,000 square meters, primarily uses Aji stone, some of which have been chiseled and processed for a unique aesthetic. The landscape design is not just visually appealing but also interactive. It incorporates elements like plantings, the use of stones, and the sound of running water to naturally alter the residents' mood and mindset as they traverse the garden. The aim is to create a space where people can coexist harmoniously with nature.

The Pavilia Hill project was realized between November 2015 and March 2016. The biggest challenge faced by Masuno and his team at Japan Landscape Consultants Ltd. was to create a landscape that was not only materially rich but also spiritually enriching. The goal was to create an art space where residents could feel close to nature and have their minds enriched.

The Pavilia Hill's innovative design has not gone unnoticed. In 2017, it was awarded the Platinum A' Landscape Planning and Garden Design Award, a prestigious accolade recognizing world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing. This award is a testament to Masuno's ability to push the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, creating spaces that enhance the quality of life for their inhabitants.
